It all began just after the end of the nineteenth century when the ordinary push pedal bicycle was introduced, man felt that it was not powerful or fast enough. Sylvester Howard Roper an American born in 1823 who in 1867 invented a two-cylinder, steam-engine motorcycle powered by coal. This then can be considered the very first motor powered cycle. Of course, that depends on your definition of a bicycle fitted with a steam engine. However, the German inventor Gottlied Daimler invented the first petrol (gas) engine motorcycle bike in 1885. Gottlied Daimler a former employee of Nicolaus August Otto made use of an engine that was developed by great engineer Nicolaus August Otto in 1876, which became the first 4-stroke internal combustion engine to be produced making it an important landmark in history known as the Otto Cycle Engine. |
